The Botanical Gardens are a true San Antonio treasure. The 33-acre living museum features seasonal floral displays, a peaceful native forest walk, modern glass pyramids, plant specimens from around the world, and an authentic log cabin. The grounds are divided into four areas.

The Lucile Halsell Conservatory features five climate-specific greenhouses surrounding a central courtyard. Plants from around the world are displayed in the Exhibit Room, Desert Pavilion, Tropical Forest Room, Palm House and Fern Grotto. The building itself is stunning, and has won several architectural design awards.

There is something for everyone in the Gardens. Highlights include the Garden for the Blind, Fountain Plaza, Ornamental Grass Garden, Rose Garden, Biblical Garden, and Shade Garden.

The Native Area is a tribute to Texas and features native plants from the East Texas piney woods, the Texas Hill Country, and South Texas.

The Sullivan Carriage House was originally constructed in 1896 and was relocated, brick by brick, in 1988. It serves as the entry point to the gardens, and also houses the Garden Gate Gift Shop and Anne Marie’s Carriage House Bistro.

The Botanical Garden is located at 555 Funston at N. New Braunfels Avenue, and is open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. year round except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. The Garden can be rented for events, such as weddings, corporate events, receptions, or other private parties.

The Botanical Gardens are a wonderful escape from the bustle of the city. If you’re looking for a more permanent place to relax, now is an optimal time to buy land in Texas.

In Texas, autumn is an ideal time to be outdoors and the perfect chance to add color to your landscaping with trees from bright yellows to fiery reds. Fall planted lawns, shrubs, perennials, and trees enjoy the warm soil and cooler air temperatures. Here are three tips on fall additions to your landscape.

Add some mums and asters for color and interest. These perennials can provide instant interest now and establish themselves for future years of enjoyment. Mums are an excellent choice. Their blooms last for weeks, not days, and one plant boasts an overabundance of blooms. In addition to perennials, add some pansies or other annuals that flourish in the cooler weather, like ornamental kale.

Add a tree or flowering shrubs. Many trees and shrubs are at their best in the fall season for providing color, and they seamlessly blend into the scenery in the Texas Hill Country. In addition, these trees appreciate a fall planting to establish roots in your landscape and will reward you with years of enjoyment. Make sure they’re in the ground in time to establish a good root system, which should not be too difficult in Texas.

Finally, adding a light layer of mulch provides some protection for plants for the winter season while adding color and texture to the fall landscape. In summer, mulch helps retain soil moisture, but it’s just as useful when the temperature drops for protecting shallow-rooted plants.

Land in Texas is perhaps the state’s best natural resource, and affordable Texas living is attracting new land buyers. If you’re interested in land for sale in Texas, Texas Homesites is an excellent source of information on Texas real estate, including master planned communities in Texas. Find us on Facebook and Twitter today.

Napa used to be regarded as the ultimate American wine place, but the Texas Hill Country is growing in popularity. Here are some interesting facts about the Texas wine industry.

Spanish missionaries began cultivating grapes near El Paso in the 1600s. Then, in the 1800s, European settlers developed vineyards by planting and growing grapes from their homelands. The first winery, Val Verde Winery, was founded in Texas in 1883. By 1890, Texas had over 25 wineries. In 1919, Prohibition put a pause on wine production, but the wine industry began again after Prohibition ended in 1933. By 2001, Texas had 46 wineries. In 2005 Texas had 85 operating wineries. But today Texas boasts more than 220 wineries.

In 2001 Texas had 1800 wine-related jobs. By 2009, there were nearly 11,000 wine-related jobs. In 2001, Texas wineries produced nearly 600,000 cases of wine. By 2009, 1.2 million cases were produced. In 2001, the Texas wine industry had an economic impact of $133 million dollars. By 2009, the Texas wine industry had an economic impact of $1.7 billion.

Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples expressed it well when he said, “This is a vibrant, growing industry that plays a very significant role in the diversification of Texas agriculture. Texas wine now has a place on the international stage and we expect to play a much larger role in the near future.”

Moving from the city to a small town can seem like an unwelcome change, but here at Texas Homesites, we believe there are many great benefits to living outside the city.

More sense of community: Smaller towns mean less people, which means it’s easier for you to get to know your neighbors and their families. Big cities are crowded and busy, while small towns are quieter and allow for more time to enjoy being with your neighbors.

Less traffic: One thing most people hate about big cities is the traffic. You can only take so much brake slamming, cursing, and hostility in one day. With smaller populations and only a couple of main roads, small towns offer a lot less traffic. Many small towns have all the amenities close enough that most people can walk there instead of worrying about driving.

Everything is close together: Small towns offer the luxury of having everything you need close together. You won’t have to worry about driving 20 minutes across town for groceries or to see a movie.

Less crime: Small towns have a lot less crime than big cities, which adds to the sense of community. You don’t have to worry about your kids playing outside or be nervous walking into a store. The overall sense of community also adds to people’s willingness to watch out for each other, which deters crime.

Local support: People in small towns generally support local stores and supermarkets. This keeps the economy from changing significantly because small town patrons are regularly supporting the businesses in their area. Local stores can also save you money because they don’t have a corporate store forcing them to overcharge for items just to make more money.

Experience the city: Texas Homesites offers community living in small towns near major Texas cities like San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Austin, so you have easy access to the hustle and bustle of the city while enjoying the relaxing and laid-back atmosphere of your small town.
